MyEtherWallet launches new open source blockchain explorer for Ethereum network

The team behind the popular Ethereum wallet interface, MEW (MyEtherWallet), announced today it is launching EthVM Alpha version, an open-source blockchain explorer which allows even new cryptocurrency users to easily navigate and understand the Ethereum network.

“The explosion of interest in cryptocurrencies in 2017 brought many new players to the blockchain space, but also bewildered many newcomers. What we need are open-source blockchain tools that can provide knowledge and resources to this growing community, in order to facilitate healthy technology development,” says Olga Kupchevskaya, Vice President of MEW.

EthVM Alpha, which will launch on the Ethereum Test Network, has been designed to provide effortless access to every single aspect of the Ethereum blockchain history, including balances, transactions, and smart contracts.

“Developing EthVM Alpha was an obvious next step for the MEW team. We want everyone in the world to interact with cryptocurrency, especially absolute beginners. An open source explorer like EthVM Alpha will not only encourage crypto-literacy among users but advance the ecosystem as a whole by making public blockchain data easily accessible for apps,” says Kupchevskaya.

EthVM Alpha is open-source, meaning that its code is entirely transparent. Open-source platforms foster innovation as other developers can learn and gain valuable insights, creating a more supportive and collaborative blockchain industry.

“In creating this explorer, we thought about three core ideas; simplifying the user experience, extracting as much valuable information as possible from the blockchain, and community collaboration,” says Aldo Borrero, Lead Developer of EthVM Alpha.

“Ethereum was built to be an open and a decentralized platform. EthVM honors the same core principles, and we’d like a global community to help us expand and improve this amazing project,” he added.

Blockchain explorers are often closed-source, and only allow users to search blocks and their transactions.

The backbone of the EthVM Alpha explorer is its advanced processing engine based on Apache Kafka, an open-source distributed streaming platform capable of handling trillions of events a day. This engine allows users to quickly explore all the other elements that make up the blockchain, such as smart contracts, ERC20 and ERC721 tokens running on the network, and the activity of individual addresses and contracts.

EthVM Alpha will provide easy-to-read statistics and insights into individual blocks, even allowing users to view pending transactions that have not yet been mined.

The explorer will be compatible across Ethereum and will soon support all Ethereum fork chains. It also supports multiple different consensus algorithms such as PoW (Proof of Work), PoS (Proof of Stake), and Clique.
